Lochee ward update 6th April 2020

Foodbank referrals can be supported through the Community Support Centres at Balgarthno Campus and Tayview Primary School in the absence of local community centres. This information has been shared through IYN facebook posts, but it would help if this can be shared more widely. We will also be adding mobile telephone contacts for staff such as Elspeth Burns-Chater (07852278509) who can take referrals and pass this direct to the Foodbank.

Local community organisations have been doing a fantastic job operating to support residents as follows;

Lochee Larder

The larder is available on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10.00am until 2.00pm from its base at the Whorterbank shops, Lochee High St (across from Rosefield Motors).

The cost is £2 for a basic bag of groceries that should last an individual for a couple of days - if there is a large family, they may need a few bags. There is also meat available through an additional membership fee of £1 per item (bacon, sausage, black pudding, beef, chicken, chicken burgers and chips ect. - there is different stuff every day).

Lochee Community Larder is also offering deliveries on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They ask that people call between 10am - 11am on the day that they would like a delivery to request a delivery. Their contact number is: 01382 936191

Menzieshill Church

The church is operating every day from their premises on Charleston Drive for the distribution of lunches to identified families. They also have the Foodbank located in their premises on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1-4pm. Referrals have to be made through recognised agencies and, whilst all public buildings are closed, these referrals can go through the community support centres at Tayview Primary school and Balgarthno campus (St. Clements/ Camperdown Primary Schools) or through IYN facebook or by contacting the empowerment team (see above).

The church also organises a food distribution point on Wednesdays from 1-3pm. Food parcels, hot soup and tea/ coffee is available by dropping by the church. A queuing system, recognising safe distancing is in place.

Whilst the Menzieshill Community centre is closed, the Thursday food larder is operating from the church. Between 11am and 1pm anyone can come along for a bag of food which includes fresh and tinned foods. The food is distributed from Fairshare and is different every week. A donation is appreciated but not necessary. Funds go to the local management group at the community centre.

CALM (Camperdown and Lochee Ministry) Team

The churches are currently offering the following specific services (which are not mutually excluded!);

  1. A telephone befriending service to vulnerable/elderly whereby a regular "buddy" keeps in touch once a week.
  2. Collection/delivery of prescriptions for those self-isolating. This has had by far the highest demand.
  3. Delivery of emergency free bags of shopping essentials to those in need.
  4. Collection and delivery of pre-ordered shopping.

Roderick Grahame’s mobile number for the above is 07903 673547. Louise Davies will be acting coordinator during the Easter break from 13th - 19th April and her number is 07511 713940 .

Louise is also offering a listening service for people who are concerned about their mental well-being or substance use during this period through her mobile telephone.
